Mangaluru: A fish container lorry driver, found guilty of causing a deadly road accident, has been sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and fined Rs 9,500 by the Third JMFC Court in Mangaluru. The judgment was delivered by Judge Suresh.

The convict, Mohammad Jaffar Saab (32), is a resident of Abuzar Colony, Bailkhundu in Uttara Kannada district.

The tragic incident occurred on September 28, 2021, along National Highway 66, between Nanthoor Circle and Pumpwell. During a reckless overtaking attempt, Jaffar’s lorry struck a two-wheeler. The pillion rider, Manas Ramanath Ugale (23), was crushed under the rear wheels and died instantly at the scene.

Following the accident, an FIR was registered at the Kadri Traffic East Police Station. Inspector Gopalakrishna Bhatt led the investigation and filed the charge sheet, citing rash and negligent driving as the cause of the fatality.

Government prosecutor Geetha Rai presented the case, examined witnesses, and successfully argued for conviction, leading to the sentencing.

The verdict serves as a reminder of the consequences of careless driving and underscores the importance of road safety.
