Mangaluru: There were smiles, songs, warm embraces and heartfelt prayers as St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, Jeppu, celebrated Grandparents and Elders’ Day with great joy and affection on Sunday, July 26. The celebration brought together nearly all the residents of the Ashram for a memorable day dedicated to honouring the wisdom, love and invaluable contributions of senior citizens.
The programme reflected the spirit of togetherness, reminding everyone that growing older is not about losing one’s place in society but about being cherished, respected and loved.
A tribute to lives filled with wisdom
Rev. Fr Norbert Lobo, senior priest from Zuze Vaz Home, was the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he described elders as living treasures whose wisdom, experience and sacrifices have helped shape families, communities and society.
Speaking about the challenges that accompany old age, he acknowledged the physical ailments and emotional struggles many seniors face but reminded them that God’s grace provides the strength to overcome every hardship. He encouraged the residents to continue living as one family, filling St Anthony’s with hope, friendship and joyful smiles.
A day of prayer, celebration and togetherness
The programme was presided over by Rev. Fr J.B. Crasta, Director of St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, who recalled that Pope Francis instituted the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in 2021. Since then, the institute has observed the occasion annually to celebrate the dignity and value of its elderly residents.
Earlier in the day, Holy Mass was concelebrated by Rev. Fr J.B. Crasta, Rev. Fr Praveen Martis, Rev. Fr Nelson Olivera and Rev. Fr Francis Gomes, with special prayers offered for the health, peace and well-being of grandparents and elders.
Music, games and unforgettable smiles
The students of St Anthony’s Charity Institutes, under the guidance of Administrator Rev. Fr Praveen Martis, organised lively games, quizzes, dances and entertainment programmes that filled the hall with laughter and excitement.
The elderly residents enthusiastically participated in every activity, while several delighted the audience with melodious songs that brought back cherished memories. Winners were presented with prizes, making the celebration even more special.
The event was compered by Master Jeevan D’Souza, while Sherline, Aniwaish, Sharon and Jeevan conducted the games and quizzes. Sharon proposed the vote of thanks.
As the celebration came to a close, it left behind more than happy memories—it reaffirmed a timeless truth that grandparents and elders are not merely part of our past, but the roots that keep families, the Church and society firmly grounded. In every wrinkle lies a story, in every smile a lifetime of love, and in every elder a reminder that the greatest gift we can offer is our time, respect and care
