The Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge, Sunitha SG, sentenced a man to five years of rigorous imprisonment after he was found guilty of circulating counterfeit currency. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the convict, Abbas (57), a resident of Ira village in Bantwal taluk.
Abbas attempted to illegally generate income by claiming he needed color prints of currency notes for his children’s project work. He arranged for Rs 100 denomination notes to be printed at a unit near the State Bank area, thus creating counterfeit currency. Abbas kept the fake notes with the intent to circulate them.
On October 31, 2020, while trying to use the counterfeit notes to purchase items at a shop near Morgan’s Gate Junction, Abbas was caught in a raid led by Pradeep TR, Police Sub-Inspector of the CCB Unit. During the operation, authorities seized 11 counterfeit notes and two genuine currency notes from Abbas.
Following the raid, a case was filed at Mangaluru South Police Station under Sections 489(b) and 489(c) of the IPC. The investigation was led by Mangaluru South station SI Suresh Kumar, who later submitted a charge sheet to the court. After reviewing 14 documents and hearing testimonies from 13 witnesses, Judge Sunitha SG found Abbas guilty of possessing counterfeit currency with intent to circulate it.
