In a progressive move, Mangalore University (MU) has earmarked Rs 5 lakh for promoting on-campus research, marking the first-ever seed grant allocation in its 2025–26 budget. The announcement was made at the special academic council meeting held on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma stated that the grant will support at least five top research proposals submitted by the permanent faculty, with each project receiving up to Rs 1 lakh. The goal is to foster academic innovation and strengthen MU’s research culture.

However, alongside growth, the university is implementing reforms. Courses with less than 30 enrolments under its constituent colleges will be discontinued from the next academic year. The BA in Travel and Tourism Management at University College, Hampankatta, has already been merged with BBA. Additionally, MU is introducing a BCA program and enhancing BBA with internship components.

Dr Dharma explained that the courses being phased out lack financial viability and academic quality, as they rely on guest faculty with limited experience, depriving students of proper exposure.

Starting 2025, all postgraduate programs offered by MU’s constituent colleges will be shifted to the Konaje campus, with the MBA in International Business being the only exception due to strong enrolment.

Though MU is a month ahead of other state universities in schedule, the new academic year is expected to begin by end of July, as semester exams commence on June 9.
