Mangalore University Faces Criticism Over Fee Hike for PG Courses
Mangalore University (MU) is under scrutiny for raising fees for its postgraduate courses amidst financial difficulties. Some fees have nearly doubled, with regional language courses like Konkani, Tulu, and Kodava increasing from Rs 11,000 to Rs 23,000. Similarly, fees for Kannada, Hindi, English, and other language courses have risen from Rs 16,000 to Rs 23,000, starting in September.
Faculty members criticize this hike, highlighting that regional language courses initially cost around Rs 16,000 but were reduced to Rs 11,000 to support regional language education. A faculty member, requesting anonymity, stated, “Doubling the fees to Rs 23,000 is unfair to students interested in these courses. MU should reduce fees to support students from economically weaker backgrounds.”
Another faculty member suspects the fee hike might be part of MU’s strategy to implement a decision to close postgraduate courses with fewer than 15 admissions. “Higher fees could deter enrollments, leading to a natural decline in admissions and justifying the shutdown,” the senior faculty member remarked.
Raju Mogaveera, MU’s registrar, defended the decision, stating it is part of an annual process. He mentioned that running each PG course costs MU around Rs 20-25 lakh per year, with no government funding available, making fee hikes necessary.
