Mangalore University will honor SCDCC Bank Chairman M N Rajendra Kumar, entrepreneur Rohan Monteiro, and industrialist Kanyana Sadashiva K Shetty with Honorary Doctorates (Honoris Causa) at its 43rd annual convocation on March 29 at Mangala Auditorium.
Vice Chancellor Prof. P L Dharma stated that the university had received 15 nominations, which were reviewed by a three-member panel before submission to the governor. The selected recipients will be recognized for their contributions to social service.
The convocation address will be delivered by Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University, Mumbai, and Vice President of the Association of Indian Universities. Chancellor Thawar Chand Gehlot will preside over the ceremony and confer the degrees.
A total of 64 PhD degrees will be awarded across Arts (12), Science (38), Commerce (11), and Education (3), with 31 recipients (48.43%) being women. Additionally, 127 rank holders from UG and PG programs will be felicitated.
For the 2023-24 NEP batch, 25,387 students appeared for UG and PG exams, with 18,723 (73.75%) passing. The university has now standardized cash prizes to a minimum of ₹500 to support meritorious students.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dharma addressed concerns regarding the decline in UG pass percentages, attributing it to initial confusion over elective choices under NEP. However, he expressed optimism, citing increased enrollments and the introduction of a three-major system.
