Mangaluru: A well-known entrepreneur, a real estate magnate, and a senior banker are likely to receive honorary doctorates during Mangalore University’s 43rd Annual Convocation on March 29. The university received 15 nominations for the Honoris Causa distinction, all of which were reviewed in a recent syndicate meeting and forwarded to the governor, the university’s chancellor, for the final decision.

Sources indicate that a high-profile property developer involved in large-scale infrastructure projects, a key figure in a regional cooperative bank, and the chairman of a major agro-based enterprise have been shortlisted. Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma stated that the ultimate selection rests with the governor, who may approve all, some, or none of the recommendations. “Some years, no honorary degree has been awarded, while in others, only one individual was chosen,” he added.

SR Harish Achar, former syndicate member, emphasized that honorary doctorates should be reserved for individuals of genuine merit and not be influenced by political or external pressures. The university’s guidelines specify that only individuals with exceptional achievements and standing should be considered.

Additionally, Mangalore University has decided to present gold medals and PhD degrees at the main convocation event, eliminating last year’s confusion caused by a split ceremony. The administration has formally conveyed this decision to the governor’s office.
