
Mangalore University VC hails journalists for their societal role
Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma emphasized the vital role of media in delivering timely news despite challenges, during the closing ceremony of the fifth District Conference of the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists‘ Association on Thursday.
He highlighted the dedication required to report hundreds of stories daily amidst diverse content, saying, “Journalists bear the responsibility of alerting and responding to societal issues, sometimes even admonishing when needed.”
Former MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, attending as a guest, noted the evolving nature of media in today’s competitive era. He acknowledged the growing influence of social media alongside traditional print and TV platforms. “In moments, even small incidents can reach a national audience. While some news may have adverse societal impacts, journalists’ efforts to maintain a positive approach and work for local welfare are commendable,” Kateel remarked.
He praised initiatives like Brand Mangalore and rural journalism programs for fostering impactful storytelling and community engagement.
