Mangaluru: Mangalore University concluded its academic sports year with a host of accomplishments, overcoming several hurdles along the way. The Department of Physical Education successfully organized multiple events and brought home notable victories, despite weather-related challenges in the later part of the season.

Senior professor of physical education CK Kishore Kumar confirmed that the university’s sports calendar had fully resumed after the pandemic pause. Among its key highlights was the hosting of the All India Inter-University Kho-Kho Championship in Udupi, featuring 16 top university teams from across the country. Mangalore University’s men’s team clinched the national title, showcasing exceptional performance.

Additionally, university athletes brought home several medals across diverse competitions. A remarkable achievement was the selection of 11 athletes from Alva’s Education Foundation, representing Mangalore University, to the Indian team for the World University Games 2025.

However, the university also faced challenges. Post-April, sports participation dropped significantly due to intense heatwaves and early rains. Both Kishore and Gerald Santhosh D’Souza, Director of Physical Education, pointed out that only a limited number of affiliated colleges consistently take part in university-organized sports.

D’Souza added that the months of April and May traditionally experience poor turnout due to extreme weather, affecting outdoor events and athlete availability.

Despite these hurdles, the department remains committed to improving participation and preparing athletes for national and international platforms.
