Mangaluru: The Bantwal Rural Police have registered a case against 15 individuals in connection with the brutal murder of Abdul Rahiman (32), a pick-up driver and secretary of the Kolthamajalu Juma Masjid in Badagabellooru village, Bantwal. The incident occurred on Tuesday, sparking outrage and tension in the region.
According to a complaint filed by Mohammad Nisar, he was en route to Polali when he received a call alerting him that Rahiman and his co-worker Kalandar Shafi (29) had been viciously attacked with sharp weapons at Irakodi in Kuriyala village. Upon arriving at the scene, Nisar found Rahiman severely injured and unresponsive, while Shafi was critically wounded and rushed to a private hospital in Mangaluru.
On the way to the hospital, Shafi reportedly informed Nisar that the attack took place between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. while they were unloading sand near the house of a local resident, Rajeevi. A mob of about 15 men, armed with swords, knives, and iron rods, allegedly dragged Rahiman from the vehicle and assaulted him. Shafi, who tried to defend his colleague, was also beaten. He told police he recognized the attackers.
The FIR names Deepak and Sumith among the accused, along with 13 others. Rahiman succumbed to his injuries shortly after and was taken to a private hospital in Deralakatte for postmortem.
The murder has triggered unrest in the area, with angry protesters gathering outside the hospital and criticizing the Congress-led state government for failing to curb violence. Security has been heightened in the region to prevent escalation.
The case has been filed under Sections 103, 109, 118(1), 118(2), 190, 191(1), 191(2), and 191(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have formed five special teams to trace and arrest the accused. Investigations are underway.
