Mangaluru: Mangaluru International Airport on Monday conducted its annual bomb threat mock exercise to assess security preparedness and strengthen coordination among the multiple agencies responsible for ensuring airport safety. The drill was aimed at testing response mechanisms, inter-agency communication and adherence to standard operating procedures in the event of a high-risk security situation.
The simulated scenario involved an abandoned bag suspected to contain explosives at the Integrated Cargo Terminal of the airport. Upon identification of the suspicious object, the Airport Security Group of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) immediately secured the area and initiated threat-neutralisation procedures in accordance with established protocols.
Officials said the CISF personnel were assisted in real time by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad of the Karnataka State Police, the Mangaluru City Police and several internal airport departments. The coordinated response ensured that the situation was handled swiftly and methodically, reflecting the preparedness of all stakeholders involved.
Focus on coordination and response time
The mock drill was designed to evaluate critical aspects such as response time, communication flow and coordination among different agencies during an emergency. Airport authorities said the exercise provided an opportunity for security personnel to rehearse their roles and responsibilities in a controlled environment, helping them remain alert and efficient during actual threats.
Special attention was given to maintaining seamless coordination between central forces, state police units and airport operational teams. Officials noted that such drills are crucial in identifying potential gaps in procedures and improving overall preparedness.
No disruption to airport operations
Airport authorities emphasised that the exercise was conducted without disrupting routine airport operations. Passenger movement, flight schedules and cargo handling continued as normal, ensuring that the mock drill did not inconvenience travellers or airline operations.
“Conducting security exercises without affecting daily operations is an important aspect of preparedness, as it mirrors real-life conditions,” an airport official said, adding that ensuring safety while maintaining efficiency remains a key priority.
Post-drill review and assessment
A comprehensive debriefing session was held after the exercise, chaired by Abhishek Yadav, Commandant and Chief Airport Security Officer. Representatives from all participating agencies attended the review meeting, during which the effectiveness of the response was analysed in detail.
During the debriefing, officials discussed areas where procedures could be further refined and highlighted best practices observed during the drill. The review also focused on strengthening coordination mechanisms and improving information-sharing protocols among agencies.
Emphasis on continuous preparedness
Officials pointed out that airports are critical public infrastructure facilities that require continuous evaluation of security mechanisms to counter evolving threats. Regular mock exercises, they said, play a vital role in keeping security personnel well-trained and prepared for real-life emergencies.
Mangaluru International Airport reiterated that the mock drill underscored its commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for passengers, airlines, cargo operators and employees. Authorities added that similar exercises will continue to be conducted at regular intervals as part of ongoing security preparedness initiatives.
Conclusion: The successful conduct of the annual bomb threat mock exercise highlights Mangaluru International Airport’s proactive approach to aviation security. By regularly testing and refining its emergency response systems, the airport aims to ensure a high level of preparedness against potential threats while maintaining smooth and secure operations.
