Mangaluru: Mangaluru International Airport, managed by Mangaluru International Airport Limited (MgIAL), handled a record 2,45,708 passengers in January 2026 — the highest monthly passenger traffic recorded since the airport’s commercial operation date (CoD) under private management began on October 31, 2020. Airport authorities described the milestone as a strong start to the year and a sign of expanding connectivity and rising traveller demand.
The passenger surge was accompanied by a record number of aircraft movements, including the highest general aviation and international movements recorded in a single month since the CoD.
Strong domestic and international split
Of the total passengers handled during the month, 1,63,966 travelled on domestic routes, while 81,742 were international passengers. The figures indicate sustained growth across both segments, with international traffic forming a significant share of the total monthly throughput.
Airport officials said the steady rise in international passenger numbers reflects improved overseas connectivity, consistent demand on Gulf and other international sectors, and better schedule reliability.
Domestic traffic also remained robust, supported by multiple daily services to major Indian hubs and strong point-to-point demand.
Record aircraft movements logged
The airport recorded a total of 1,624 air traffic movements in January. This includes 1,141 domestic flight movements and 425 international movements, along with 58 general aviation movements.
According to the airport operator, this represents the highest overall aircraft movement count in a month since the CoD. It also marks a new monthly high specifically for general aviation and international aircraft movements.
Aircraft movement data includes arrivals and departures across scheduled commercial services as well as non-scheduled and private flights under general aviation.
Operator cites expanding global footprint
In an official social media post, the airport highlighted the milestone as a benchmark moment. “A grand beginning to 2026, #MangaluruAirport setting a new monthly benchmark in January. The month’s passenger traffic and aircraft movements reflect our expanding global footprint and commitment to seamless connectivity,” the statement said.
Officials indicated that route stability, airline partnerships, and improved passenger facilities have contributed to higher utilisation and repeat traveller preference.
Growth since CoD transition
Since the transition to private management in late 2020, the airport has focused on operational efficiency, infrastructure upgrades, and route development. The latest figures suggest a steady recovery and expansion trajectory following earlier fluctuations in air travel demand.
Industry observers note that Tier-2 airports have seen rising passenger volumes due to regional economic growth, diaspora travel, tourism flows and improved airline network planning.
Higher general aviation numbers also suggest increased use of the airport by charter operators, business jets and special category flights.
Focus on connectivity and passenger experience
Airport authorities have repeatedly emphasised investments in passenger experience, turnaround efficiency and safety compliance. Enhancements in terminal services, digital processing and airline coordination are seen as supporting factors in handling higher volumes without major congestion.
The operator said it will continue working with airlines and regulatory authorities to add routes and frequencies where demand justifies expansion.
Conclusion
The record-breaking January performance positions the airport on a strong growth path for 2026, with both passenger numbers and aircraft movements reaching new highs. With sustained demand and network expansion, airport authorities expect further gains in traffic through the year.
