Mangaluru: The road leading to Mangaluru International Airport has become a growing concern due to the increasing number of accidents along this route. Serving as a key passage for both locals and travelers, the road has seen a troubling surge in accidents, many of which have been fatal.

Despite the heavy traffic, there is a lack of proper safety measures, putting both drivers and pedestrians at risk. Speeding and traffic violations are common occurrences, with vehicles frequently exceeding speed limits. This reckless behavior has turned areas such as Bondel, Kavoor, and Kenjar into frequent accident zones.

One of the key issues is the absence of speed bumps, despite the road passing by schools and colleges. Authorities hesitate to install these traffic-calming devices due to concerns about inconveniencing VIP travelers heading to the airport. This has made it easier for motorists to speed and increased the chances of accidents.

Another factor contributing to the problem is poor street lighting, particularly after Kunjathbail Cross. At night, some areas become pitch dark, making it hard for drivers to identify hazards. The situation is worse near Maravoor Bridge, where the lack of proper lighting makes it difficult to read road signs, leading to confusion and accidents.

With the rising number of accidents, urgent action is needed. Measures like installing speed bumps, improving street lighting, and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations are crucial steps to enhance safety and reduce mishaps on this busy stretch.
