In the aftermath of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty’s murder, Mangaluru police have filed a case against a 26-year-old man for allegedly sharing provocative content online that could fuel communal tensions.
As per a press release from the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner’s office, two Instagram handles — “VHP Bajrang Dal Ashoknagar” and “Shankhanada” — were found to be disseminating inflammatory posts that reportedly aimed to incite hostility between communities following Shetty’s killing.
The case has been registered at the Urwa Police Station under Sections 353(1) and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS). Considering the nature of the offense, the investigation has now been handed over to the Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Crime Police Station of Mangaluru City for deeper inquiry.
The person accused in the case has been identified as Akhilesh, a resident of Udupi. Authorities believe he managed both Instagram profiles and is responsible for uploading the objectionable posts. The content allegedly attempted to stir unrest and could disrupt communal harmony in the sensitive aftermath of the murder.
Meanwhile, state Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara recently declined demands for a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into Shetty’s death, stating that the Karnataka police are capable of handling the case.
Investigations into Akhilesh’s digital activity and the broader intent behind the posts are currently ongoing.
