Mangaluru: The city of Mangaluru has come alive with festive fervour as Dasara celebrations kick off at the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatha Temple. This year’s festival features grand temple rituals, a massive cultural showcase involving over 1,500 artistes, and the traditional tiger dance (hulivesha), adding spectacular energy to the festivities.
Traditional rituals uphold age-old customs
The festival commenced with the ceremonial installation of idols including Mahaganapati, Sharada, Adishakti, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Mahakali, Mahagauri, Siddhidhatri, Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, and Kushmandini Devi. Key rituals included Gurupuja, Homa, and Navakalasha Abhisheka. Following the rituals, Goddess Sharada was carried in a grand procession within the temple before being installed in the Darbar Hall.
Similar festivities began at the Mahathobhara Sri Mangaladevi Temple, marking the start of Navarathri Mahotsava across the city.
Hulivesha: the tiger dance
The traditional hulivesha, or tiger dance, added a thrilling spectacle to the celebrations.
