Mangaluru City Corporation Launches 'hasire Usiru' Plantation Drive

Mangaluru: In a significant step to enhance the city’s green cover, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is organizing a plantation drive named ‘Hasire Usiru’ at Kudumal Ranga Rao Town Hall, announced Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur. The event coincides with the birthday of renowned environmentalist Salumarada Thimmakka on July 8.

Planting 10,000 Saplings Across the City

As part of the initiative, about 10,000 saplings, including fruit-bearing varieties like mango and jackfruit, will be planted near 19 overhead tanks and ground level service reservoirs (GLSR) developed under the Jalasiri scheme. Saplings will also be planted on the land available near old overhead tanks. These tanks, equipped with compound walls, eliminate the need for separate fencing to protect the saplings. Additionally, a drip irrigation system will be implemented to ensure regular watering of the plants.

Expanding the Greenery in All Wards

The plantation drive will extend across all 60 wards, utilizing available government land. The MCC has allocated Rs 7.65 lakh for the purchase of saplings from the forest department. In response to concerns about declining greenery in certain wards, the Mayor mentioned a proposal for median beautification through collaboration with builders. These builders will be tasked with maintaining the median stretches and planting saplings along them.
