Since the early hours of May 20, Mangaluru has been experiencing relentless rainfall, following a red alert issued for Dakshina Kannada district, expected to last for the next two days.
The heavy showers have wreaked havoc in areas like Kavoor, Adyapady, and Kodialbail. In these parts of the city, boundary walls have given way, sewage water has seeped into households, and large amounts of silt and debris have gathered within residential compounds.
At Kavoor Junction, runoff from private property has overwhelmed adjacent areas, leading to serious soil displacement. With no efficient drainage in place, murky water loaded with mud surged onto roads and spilled into homes, worsening the chaos.
Residents say they’ve been flagging these issues for years without any action. They allege that both local authorities and the ward corporator have turned a blind eye to their appeals. Ironically, the previous corporator lives in direct sight of the damage but has remained unresponsive to the community’s distress.
In Adyapady, a portion of a nearby hillside gave way due to the downpour, burying a home under layers of slush and water. The residence is now engulfed in thick muck, disrupting daily life and causing distress to the occupants.
Kodialbail witnessed the collapse of a retaining wall at an apartment complex. Although the structural failure was severe, no injuries were reported, providing some relief amid the destruction.
