Mangaluru: Suspect apprehended after months on the run

The Mangaluru East Police have arrested a 33-year-old man who had been evading authorities in connection with a counterfeit currency case registered in 2023. The arrest, made on Monday, August 25, concluded an extensive search for the accused.

The arrested individual, Nizam, a resident of Talapadi Jodu Marg near BC Road, was implicated in a case registered at Mangaluru East Police Station under Crime No. 01/2023, invoking Sections 489(B) and 489(C) read with Section 34 of the IPC. The case pertains to the possession and circulation of counterfeit currency and is currently under trial.

Absconding after bail

Law enforcement sources said that Nizam had previously secured bail but failed to appear for trial proceedings, violating the court-imposed conditions. Despite eight arrest warrants, he continued to evade capture.

The breakthrough came when personnel from the Crime Branch of Mangaluru East Police, working with warrant execution staff, acted on credible intelligence and apprehended Nizam near Valalu, close to Uppinangadi.

Further legal proceedings

Following the arrest, authorities have initiated additional proceedings under Section 269 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)-2023 for contravening bail conditions. The accused has been presented before the Honorable Court for further judicial action.

Police officials emphasised their commitment to pursuing absconding offenders and ensuring timely judicial proceedings in cases involving counterfeit currency.
