Mangaluru’s Barke police have booked nine undertrial prisoners for allegedly trying to sabotage mobile jammer systems within the district jail.

According to Jail Superintendent M H Ashekhan, five 2G/3G signal-blocking devices had been installed earlier. To enhance them to 5G, the prison department had signed a contract with TCIL, which was tasked with upgrading the systems. The final step before installation completion was TCIL handing over the upgraded units. However, some inmates in sections ‘A’ and ‘B’ reportedly attempted to render these jammers non-functional.

Prisoners allegedly sought to damage the devices by covering them with cotton and sprinkling salt on air conditioning units. TCIL officials, upon discovering this act, alerted the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Karnataka, on February 28.

Following this, jail authorities scrutinized CCTV footage and identified nine undertrials responsible for the tampering attempt. After discussions with the agency concerned, a formal complaint was lodged, demanding strict action.

In another incident, after 56 inmates were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning on March 5, a few undertrials created chaos inside the jail. They shouted obscenities, vandalized public property, assaulted prison personnel, and attempted to erase CCTV recordings.

Authorities are investigating both incidents to ensure security measures within the facility remain intact.
