Mangaluru: A devastating landslide in Montepada, Manjanadi village, Konaje, on May 30, 2025, claimed the lives of three people, including two small children, leaving a mother fighting for survival and now seeking public support for medical treatment.

Early morning landslide traps family

The tragedy struck in the early hours of May 30, when heavy rainfall in the coastal districts triggered a collapse of the Ittalakodi Koppala hillock, which fell onto a house belonging to Kanthappa. Inside the house, Kanthappa, his wife Prema Poojary (52), Ashwini, and her two children, Aryan (3) and Arusha, were asleep.

Kanthappa was trapped briefly while rushing outside but was rescued by locals and admitted to the hospital with a leg injury. Tragically, Prema Poojary died on the spot due to serious injuries.

Mother’s instinct in dire circumstances

Ashwini, sleeping with her children, was pinned under a beam from the mezzanine. Despite being trapped, she reportedly used her body to shield her children, demonstrating extraordinary maternal instinct. Locals arriving at the site found Aryan unresponsive, while Arusha was alive but in distress.

Rescue personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) worked for several hours under challenging conditions to free Ashwini and her children. Aryan’s body was retrieved during the operation, and although Ashwini and Arusha were rescued alive, Arusha died on the way to the hospital, raising the death toll to three.

Challenging rescue operation

The rescue operation was hindered by heavy rainfall and the remote location of the house. Equipment had to be carried over 2.5 km, and the presence of large trees complicated the operation. Rescue workers described the situation as highly sensitive, as any misstep could have endangered the lives of Ashwini and her surviving child.

Current situation and appeal for help

Four months after the incident, Ashwini is now living in Paavoor with her newborn children. She requires financial assistance for medical treatment, including an artificial leg, estimated at ₹25 lakh.
