Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district experienced scattered showers on Tuesday, with Mangaluru city witnessing light to moderate rainfall along with alternating spells of sunshine and cloud cover.

Showers were recorded across several parts of the district including Puttur, Uppinangady, Karaya, Bantwal, BC Road, Kalladka, Sullia, Subrahmanya, Panja, Vittla, Suratkal, Ullal, Kanyana, Beltangady, Madanthyar and Dharmasthala.

As per rainfall statistics available till 8:30 am on August 19, Belthangady taluk registered the highest at 46.4 mm. It was followed by Kadaba with 39.9 mm, Moodbidri at 34 mm, and Puttur with 23.2 mm. Bantwal recorded 21.9 mm, while Sullia received 20.2 mm. Mulki noted 23.9 mm, Ullal saw 9.4 mm, and Mangaluru city itself reported 10.8 mm. The overall average across the district was calculated at 31 mm.

The downpour caused minor destruction, damaging 11 homes partially and bringing down 54 electric poles across different taluks.

Preparedness measures are already in place, with disaster management teams deployed at key locations. Fifteen personnel from the SDRF and civil defence have been positioned in Mangaluru, while ten have been assigned to Subrahmanya. Additionally, a 25-member NDRF unit has been stationed in Puttur. To strengthen emergency response, 26 boats have been kept ready for possible rescue operations.

With predictions of more rainfall along the coastal stretch, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for August 20, urging residents to remain cautious.
