In a major step toward making Mangaluru one of India’s greenest cities, Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan M P, IAS, launched the Amara initiative on April 21, urging every resident, school, and organisation to take ownership of the city’s environmental future. Aptly named Amara, meaning immortal, the campaign aims to plant 30,000+ trees across 60 city wards and over 1 lakh mangroves along the coastline.
Launched in partnership with the District Administration, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), Forest and Education Departments, and CFAL, the campaign was inspired by a 2023 Tree Count Survey led by Prof. Dr Smitha Hegde, which revealed that only 6.24% of the city’s public spaces had tree cover. This urgent finding sparked a citywide ward-wise green plan that is now open to public participation.
