Mangaluru MCC Commissioner Transferred Amid Tensions Over Development Funds
Mangaluru: The State government has transferred C.L. Anand, the Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), and appointed Ravichandra Naik, Special Land Acquisition Officer for the Upper Tunga Project in Shivamogga, as his successor. Anand has been reassigned to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms with immediate effect.
The move comes amid growing tensions between Mr. Anand and city corporation councillors from various parties over the release of area development funds. During a council meeting on January 4, councillors raised concerns about the release of ₹1 crore per councillor, a promise made by former Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur. However, Anand clarified that funds would be allocated based on project priorities and available resources. This response dissatisfied several councillors, leading to protests in the council.
Adding to the controversy, Congress councillor Abdul Rauf accused Anand of irregularities during the meeting. While his allegations were not formally addressed, they signaled underlying discontent. Anand denied the accusations, assuring transparency and openness to an inquiry.
The change in leadership is expected to impact the resolution of ongoing issues within the council, particularly as the council’s term approaches its end.
