Mangaluru: Dr Derek A. Lobo, one of the world’s foremost authorities in leprosy control and a respected public-health leader, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, scientific excellence and unwavering commitment to the most marginalised communities.

Five decades dedicated to eliminating leprosy

Born in Attavar, Mangaluru, Dr Lobo devoted over 50 years of his life to eradicating leprosy and reducing the deep social stigma associated with the disease. His exceptional field expertise and commitment led to his appointment with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Bangladesh, where he played a pivotal role in the country achieving elimination of leprosy as a public-health problem in 1998.

Leadership in WHO South-East Asia

Dr Lobo later served at the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia (SEARO) as Regional Adviser for Leprosy, Filariasis, Soil-Transmitted Helminths and Yaws. He worked across ten countries, offering technical guidance that contributed to the elimination of leprosy, lymphatic filariasis and yaws across the region. Much of his impact was quiet, meticulous and rooted in service rather than recognition.

Service beyond WHO

He worked closely with organisations such as the Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation and Emmaus International (Switzerland), spearheading programmes for early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Admired for his humility and integrity, Dr Lobo was remembered by colleagues as a disciplined leader, a compassionate mentor and a visionary who always placed dignity at the centre of healthcare.

Writer, mentor and community leader

Dr Lobo co-authored Heroes & Heroines of 20th Century Leprosy Work in India, highlighting the contributions of individuals and institutions who fought leprosy in the country. His memoir, Happy Accidents and Lucky Incidents: The Story of My Life, reflects on a life of extraordinary purpose.

He also served on the Governing Board of Father Muller Charitable Institutions and was a former President of CASK, Mangaluru. Outside public health, he was a passionate coffee planter who cherished nature and simple living.

A legacy of compassion and service

Dr Derek A. Lobo is survived by his wife, Patsy Lobo, along with family, friends, colleagues and countless individuals whose lives were touched by his compassionate work. His legacy lives on through the millions who benefitted from early diagnosis, improved care and restored dignity because of his lifelong mission.

May his noble soul rest in eternal peace.
