Mangaluru city police collected ₹6.66 crore in traffic fines in 2024, booking 1.44 lakh cases for rule violations. The city, intersected by three National and State Highways, sees an alarming rate of accidents—averaging four daily. Annually, around 166 people die, and 1,130 sustain injuries, with 76% of fatalities involving pedestrians and motorcyclists.

To address these concerns, authorities identified 16 accident-prone black spots and initiated corrective measures such as better signages, road redesign, and stricter law enforcement. Despite frequent accidents, public awareness remains low, leading to complacency in road safety practices.

Seven highway patrol vehicles have been deployed to respond swiftly to accidents. Additionally, illegally parked vehicles are being removed to ensure smooth traffic flow, especially for emergency services.

The city police have submitted a comprehensive junction improvement plan to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). Implementation will involve collaboration with NHAI, the State Highway Department, Public Works Department, MCC, Mangaluru Smart City Ltd, and the Regional Transport Office.

Recognizing the importance of early education, the police are conducting awareness programs in schools and colleges to instill safe driving habits from a young age.
