Despite a Supreme Court ban on tinted windscreens aimed at improving road safety and curbing criminal activity, numerous vehicles in Mangaluru continue to violate the regulation by using dark films on their windows.

In response, the Mangaluru City Police have initiated a focused enforcement campaign. Commissioner of Police Anupam Agrawal stated that the Traffic Department has deployed teams at key checkpoints throughout the city. These units are inspecting vehicles, checking documentation, and identifying violations related to tinted glass usage.

Over the past 10 days, action has been taken against 504 vehicles, with total fines amounting to ₹2.53 lakh. Drivers found flouting the rule were asked to remove the tinted films immediately.

Commissioner Agrawal stressed that the drive is both corrective and preventive. While penalties are being imposed, the focus is also on raising public awareness about the importance of adhering to road safety norms. He cited the Supreme Court’s guidelines, which clearly prohibit the use of unauthorized tints or black films on any vehicle windows.

He also highlighted that these efforts are being implemented strictly under the Motor Vehicles Act, and non-compliance would attract legal action. The police have appealed to the public for cooperation and reminded citizens that these rules are enforced not to inconvenience, but to ensure public security and safe commuting conditions.

The crackdown is expected to continue in the coming weeks as authorities push for complete compliance.
