Mangaluru police have detained 27-year-old Bharat Shetty under the Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders, Slum Grabbers, and Video or Audio Pirates Act, 1985, commonly referred to as the Goonda Act.
In a statement released on January 31, the police confirmed that a detention order under Section 3 of the Goonda Act was passed against Shetty, a resident of Idya village in Surathkal.
Shetty has been linked to 13 serious criminal cases within the Mangaluru Police Commissionerate and Dakshina Kannada district. These include one murder, four attempted murders, and charges involving dacoity, unlawful assembly, assault, and offences against women.
Despite facing multiple legal actions, Shetty allegedly continued to engage in criminal activities, presenting a significant threat to public safety. In light of this, the police issued a preventive detention order to curb his actions and maintain law and order in the area.
