Mangaluru: In a citizen-friendly initiative, the city police successfully recovered and returned 150 mobile phones reported lost by members of the public, showcasing the effective use of digital tools in policing.
According to an official release, the operation was conducted throughout March, during which police traced missing devices using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. The effort was based on complaints filed by citizens who had registered their lost phones on the CEIR platform.
Coordinated effort across police units
Following the registration of complaints, police teams across the district launched a coordinated drive to track and recover the missing devices. Each complaint was verified before initiating action, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in the process.
Officials said the drive involved close coordination among different police stations and technical teams, enabling them to trace the devices through IMEI-based tracking facilitated by the CEIR system.
The operation highlights the growing integration of technology in everyday policing, allowing authorities to respond more effectively to common public grievances such as lost or stolen mobile phones.
Devices returned to rightful owners
After successfully tracing the phones, the recovered devices were handed over to their respective owners at jurisdictional police stations. Beneficiaries expressed relief and appreciation for the swift action taken by the police.
The department emphasised that citizens should promptly report lost or stolen phones on the CEIR portal, as early registration significantly improves the chances of recovery.
Public urged to utilise digital platforms
Police officials encouraged the public to make greater use of the CEIR portal, which is part of the Government of India’s initiative to curb mobile theft and enable tracking of lost devices. By blocking and tracing phones through their unique IMEI numbers, the system helps prevent misuse and facilitates recovery.
Authorities also advised users to keep a record of their mobile phone’s IMEI number and necessary purchase details, which are essential for filing complaints and enabling tracking.
Conclusion
The recovery of 150 mobile phones reflects the effectiveness of coordinated policing and the adoption of digital tools like CEIR in addressing everyday concerns of citizens. With increased public awareness and timely reporting, such initiatives can further enhance recovery rates and strengthen trust between the police and the community.
