Mangaluru, October 8, 2025: In a major enforcement operation, the Barke Police raided the “Aamantrana” shop located in Saibeen Complex, Lalbagh, Mangaluru, and confiscated banned e-cigarettes, unlicensed cigarettes, and hookah devices valued at approximately ₹9.7 lakh. The raid underscores the police’s ongoing efforts to curb the illegal sale of tobacco products and e-cigarettes, particularly among youth and vulnerable populations.

Details of the seizure

The operation was conducted based on credible intelligence regarding the sale and storage of prohibited tobacco products. The team, led by Police Inspector Mohan Kottari, seized:

  • 847 e-cigarettes of various brands, valued at ₹4,43,125
  • 10 packs (412 boxes) and 86 additional packs of domestic and foreign cigarettes lacking the mandatory 85% health warning labels, totaling ₹5,09,120
  • 25 hookah devices of different designs, worth ₹20,500

The total estimated value of the seized items is ₹9,72,745. Police officers noted that these products were being sold without proper licensing and in violation of existing tobacco control laws.

Arrests and legal action

Three individuals have been booked in connection with the illegal sale and storage of these items:

  • Santosh (32) from Bantwal Taluk
  • Ibrahim Irshad (33) from Kudroli
  • Shivu Deshakodi, the owner of the “Aamantrana” shop

The case has been registered under Sections 7 & 8 of the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, and Section 20(2) of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) Amendment Bill, 2015. Investigations are ongoing to determine the supply chain and other individuals involved in the illegal trade.
