An attempted assault on one of the key suspects in the Suhas Shetty murder investigation was narrowly averted at the Mangaluru prison, thanks to prompt action based on prior intelligence inputs.

Security agencies had earlier alerted Mangaluru police about a potential act of vengeance targeting one of the accused while in custody. Acting on this tip-off, authorities heightened vigilance and had already transferred most of the suspects to different jails across Karnataka, including those in Mysuru, Belagavi, and Dharwad.

However, with accused Chotte Naushad’s police custody concluding on Monday, May 19, he was temporarily brought back to Mangaluru to be presented in court. Post the legal proceedings, arrangements were underway to transfer him to Mysuru prison.

During this handover phase, Naushad reportedly expressed a desire to interact with another inmate inside the Mangaluru facility. It was in the course of facilitating this meeting that unknown individuals inside the jail launched an attempted assault, throwing stones and other objects at him.

Initial findings indicate that the attack was likely an act of retribution connected to Suhas Shetty’s murder. Fortunately, the heightened police presence and their immediate intervention prevented any major injuries.

As of now, 11 suspects have been detained in the murder case. All have been moved to separate jails to avoid any further incidents. Meanwhile, security at Mangaluru jail has been tightened further, and investigations into the plot behind the attack are continuing.
