Mangaluru: The number of moral policing cases has significantly dropped within Mangaluru Commissionerate limits, according to recent police records. Data shows that only one case was recorded in 2025, a steep fall from four in 2024 and seven in 2023. Similarly, Dakshina Kannada district reported four cases in 2024, compared to eight in the previous year.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal credited this progress to coordinated efforts by the police team. Officers from the Anti-Communal Wing have been actively collecting ground-level intelligence, tracking repeat offenders, and assessing if preventive detention is necessary. Agrawal emphasized that the Anti-Communal Wing has been operating discreetly, continuously monitoring suspicious activities.
The Anti-Communal Wing was established on June 13, 2023, under the guidance of Home Minister Dr. G Parameshwara, and later expanded with dedicated units functioning under ACPs across Mangaluru Central, South, and North — modeled after the city’s Anti-Narcotics Squad.
DCP (Law and Order) Sidharth Goyal revealed that since 2016, a total of 195 offenders, including those linked to moral policing, have been externed. The figures jumped from 50 in 2023 to 103 in 2024, with one externment this year. Out of 217 proposals received, the Goonda Act has been invoked against 40 offenders so far, with the High Court confirming action against 15 individuals, including six recently.
Replying to MLA Ivan D’Souza’s query in the legislative council, Parameshwara assured that stern actions, like the effective e-beat system and constant surveillance by local officers, are in place to curb such incidents and ensure peace.
