Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) has revised its plan to connect the popular tourist spots of Sultan Battery and Tannirbhavi. Instead of the initially proposed hanging bridge, MSCL will now construct a permanent Sea-River Link road bridge across the Phalguni River. The new 260-meter bridge will accommodate both vehicles and pedestrians, benefiting local residents, fishermen, and boosting tourism.
The tender process for this Rs 42 crore project is nearing completion. In addition to the bridge, approximately Rs 12 crore will be spent on developing approach roads. The bridge construction is part of MSCL’s Waterfront Area Development Sub Project, which also includes area development works in Sultan Battery and Tannirbhavi.
The initial plan for a pedestrian-only hanging bridge, proposed in 2010 by then Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, was abandoned in 2012 due to technical challenges. The idea was later revived under MSCL’s Sea-River Link project but has now been replaced by the more practical road bridge plan.
