Mangaluru: The government has granted yet another extension for the Mangaluru Smart City project, pushing the completion deadline to December 2025. Originally slated for March 2022, the ambitious project has faced repeated delays due to administrative lapses and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Key works—such as the Netravati River Water Front Development and Sultan Battery–Bengre Bridge—remain unfinished. Around ₹80 crore worth of ongoing work continues at a slow pace, prompting the government to extend the timeline to allow their completion.

The Mangaluru Smart City project involves 105 proposed works with a total estimated budget of ₹960 crore—₹453 crore from the Centre and ₹463 crore from the state. While significant progress has been made, six major works, including road upgrades and LED lighting installations, are still pending.

Ongoing projects include:

  • Five packages of Water Front Development

  • Mahakalipadpu–Morgan’s Gate Road

  • Padil–Pumpwell Road

  • Sultan Battery–Tannirbhavi Bridge

  • City-wide LED lighting installations

    • Despite these delays, several notable works have been completed. These include:

    • Smart Roads and Shelters

  • Pedestrian underpass

  • Mangala Stadium improvements

  • ICU and surgical block at Wenlock Hospital

  • Clock Tower renovation

  • e-Toilets and e-Schools

  • Command and Control Centre

  • Lake rejuvenation projects

    • Arun Prabha K S, General Manager (Administration), Mangaluru Smart City, stated, “Most works are in their final phase, and this extension ensures smooth completion without interruptions.”
