A new ‘Smart Food Street’ is set to be developed near Mangala Stadium in Mangaluru, as part of the Smart City project. The road behind the stadium has been chosen for this initiative to prevent traffic congestion and minimize inconvenience to visitors. This decision was finalized in a recent meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mullai Muhilan. The revenue generated from the food street will be utilized for the development and upkeep of Mangala Stadium.

DC Muhilan emphasized that locating the food street behind the stadium is a strategic move to manage traffic better and ensure smooth access for people arriving at the stadium. Mayor Sudhir Shetty Kannur elaborated on the street vending plan, stating that street vending could involve selling goods by the roadside, using movable trolleys, or carrying goods on one’s head. To accommodate such activities, 10 areas across the city will be identified for inspection, with the food street behind Mangala Stadium being a priority, funded by the Smart City grant.

Pradeep D’Souza, Deputy Director of the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department, added that plans are underway to ensure the food street maintains high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. The project will also include underground drainage and washroom facilities, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
