Mangaluru Trust Urges Task Force to Tackle Illegal Hoardings
The Shri Ambamaheshwari Seva Trust, known for its work in traffic and waste management through the model ward initiative in Mangaladevi, Hoige Bazaar, and Bolar, has called for a dedicated task force to address the growing menace of illegal hoardings in Mangaluru.
Trust General Secretary Umanath Kotekar stated that they have formally written to the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) commissioner, highlighting the rampant issue of unauthorized flex banners, hoardings, and plastic posters. Despite government bans, these materials continue to clutter footpaths, block traffic signals, and deface public spaces. Many outdated event banners are left unattended, becoming both an eyesore and a hazard for pedestrians and motorists.
The trust has raised concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety, emphasizing that loose or falling banners pose risks to commuters. They have also underscored the environmental damage, as plastic flex contributes to pollution and drainage blockages. Unauthorized hoardings encroach on public spaces, making it difficult for people to navigate footpaths, road dividers, and intersections.
To combat this, the trust has proposed forming a task force under the zonal commissioner, including health inspectors and marshals, to monitor and enforce rules. They also stressed collaborating with NGOs and law enforcement for stricter implementation and regular inspections.
Additionally, the trust advocates for hefty fines on violators, designating specific spaces for permitted banners, and launching awareness campaigns to educate businesses and citizens on legal procedures.
With the motto “Namma Ooru, Namma Hemme, Namma Parisara, Namma Javabdari” (Our Town, Our Pride, Our Environment, Our Responsibility), the trust is striving for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Mangaluru.
