The Urban Development Department has initiated efforts to assess the feasibility of a metro corridor connecting Mangaluru, Udupi, and Manipal. Officials from BMRCL and Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have been directed to review the feasibility study submitted by S. Mohanadass Hegde, a former KPCC secretary.

Hegde’s techno-economic analysis, part of a 2025-2030 master plan, highlights the importance of a 64-km metro line to enhance regional connectivity. The project integrates with existing transport hubs and aligns with initiatives like the National Infrastructure Pipeline, Smart City Mission, and Gati Shakti.

The metro will be implemented in two phases:
📌 Phase 1 (2025-2027) – Land acquisition, groundwork, and initial construction.
📌 Phase 2 (2028-2030) – Full-scale construction, testing, and regulatory approvals.

A hybrid funding model combining government investment, PPP, and global funding is proposed, with coordination between NITI Aayog, Railways, and state authorities. The project also emphasizes EV integration and smart infrastructure.

Hegde affirmed that the metro aligns with state and national urban transport goals, ensuring a sustainable and future-ready transit system for the coastal belt.
