Mangaluru: Renowned religious and educational leader K M Sharief, a senior figure in Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, passed away on Tuesday evening at a private hospital in Mangaluru after a brief illness. He was 85.

Affectionately known as Sharief Sahab, he was widely respected for his significant contributions to the religious, educational, and social sectors across the region. A man of deep conviction and quiet strength, he played a pivotal role in several key institutions established under the banner of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

He was the founding member and former president of the Sanmarga Publication Trust, which publishes the Sanmarga weekly and runs Shanti Prakashana, a respected publishing house known for its socio-religious literature.

In the field of education, Sharief was the first president of the Shanti Educational Trust, which manages Hira Educational Institutions in Babbukatte. He also co-founded Mansoora Arabic College in Hassan and was actively involved with the Karnataka-Goa advisory board of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

Known for his humility, simplicity, and steadfast service, Sharief Sahab was also the elder brother of the late Ibrahim Saeed, a noted orator and the founding editor of Sanmarga weekly.

He leaves behind his wife, five sons, one daughter, and a wide circle of family, friends, and followers who deeply admired him.

His janaza (funeral prayer) will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday at Zeenath Baksh Juma Masjid, Bunder, Mangaluru.
