A group of individuals cheated by a Mangaluru-based international recruitment agency named “The Legend” are now urging for reimbursement of the fees they paid for overseas jobs that never came through.
Leena Fernandes, representing herself and 29 others, disclosed to the media that they had paid the company in 2021 for job placements in countries like Spain and Australia. She revealed, “I invested ₹5 lakh but have only managed to recover ₹2 lakh.” Her statement is part of the complaints lodged at the Mangaluru East Police station in a fraud case registered in 2023.
Another affected person, Xavier Mathias, shared he handed over ₹5 lakh for a job promised to a relative at a finance company in Australia but is still waiting for any refund. Gilbert Vaz mentioned that his daughter, who quit her lecturing position, paid ₹6 lakh in 2022 and so far has received just ₹1 lakh back.
Laveena Aranha paid ₹1.3 lakh for a Qatar-based job for her son, while Anita Fernandes gave ₹5 lakh in 2021 for a job in the Netherlands for her daughter. Neither has gotten any money returned.
Brandon Pinto pointed out the general lack of public knowledge about confirming overseas recruiters with the Ministry of External Affairs and the importance of the Protector of Emigrants.
Authorities have confirmed that the proprietor, Alwyn D’Mello, was apprehended, and several items were confiscated. The investigation is still active.
