A neglected wasteland near Mangala Stadium, once overrun with garbage, syringes, and beer bottles, now thrives as a lush mini butterfly park, thanks to the tireless efforts of two friends, Kumar and Raviraj Shetty. Over seven years, they cleared three to five tons of trash, planted 20,000 saplings, and turned the area into a sanctuary for butterflies, birds, and the community.
Kumar, a retired Wipro employee, and Raviraj, from Akbar Travels, began this journey during their morning walks. Frustrated by the filth, they decided to clean the stretch and plant crotons, flowers, and fruit-bearing plants. Today, the park attracts vibrant butterflies and birds, especially during the monsoon, and has become a peaceful retreat for locals.
Their dedication, from daily maintenance to sourcing plants from Raviraj’s garden in Hebri, Udupi, has inspired others to care for their surroundings. The park is now celebrated as a symbol of transformation and hope, showing that persistence can turn even a wasteland into a haven of beauty and life.
