Mangaluru has long been seen as a city with the potential to shine as a key tourism hotspot, thanks to its coastal charm, cultural depth, and varied attractions. Yet, the city has struggled to translate this promise into sustained visitor appeal. To change that, the Karnataka government recently proposed extending night hours until 1:00 AM, hoping to breathe life into the city’s after-dark scene.
Momentum began building with the announcement of a month-long cultural festival set between December 2024 and January 2025, intended to re-energize Mangaluru’s cultural identity. Locals and entrepreneurs welcomed the idea, viewing it as a step toward establishing the city as a year-round tourist magnet.
But optimism has taken a hit following two troubling incidents—one in Kudupu and another in Bajpe—that have reignited concerns over public safety. These episodes have stirred fear among citizens and led to a renewed clampdown by authorities. In response, police have been enforcing an early closure of businesses by 9:30 PM, undermining the very goal of a vibrant nightlife and impacting local livelihoods.
