Mangaluru: Nearly 15 years after the initial foundation stone was laid by former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in 2010, construction of a much-awaited bridge connecting two major tourist destinations—Sultan Battery and Tannirbhavi—has finally begun.

The Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) has launched work on a 260-meter-long sea-river link road bridge across the Phalguni River. Unlike the initial plan for a pedestrian-only hanging bridge, the new project features a 10.5-meter-wide permanent structure designed for both vehicles and pedestrians. The revised project, estimated at ₹64 crore, is expected to be completed in 18 to 24 months.

Originally, work on a pedestrian bridge began in 2012 but was abandoned due to administrative hurdles. MSCL later revived the plan under its Sea-River Link initiative, eventually opting for a conventional road bridge to enhance connectivity.

The new bridge will greatly benefit local residents and fishermen while boosting tourism in the region. Additionally, MSCL has announced area development initiatives for Sultan Battery and Tannirbhavi as part of its waterfront development project.
