Mass Food Poisoning Strikes Mangaluru Jail, 44 Inmates Hospitalized
A total of 44 undertrial prisoners from Mangaluru district jail were admitted to Wenlock District Hospital after experiencing severe illness, suspected to be caused by food poisoning on Wednesday.
The inmates fell sick following the consumption of flattened rice, soon complaining of intense abdominal pain. Some even collapsed after recurrent vomiting episodes, prompting immediate medical attention. Fortunately, all affected individuals are now responding well to treatment and recovering, confirmed District Health and Family Welfare Officer, Dr. H.R. Thimmaiah.
Mangaluru district jail, which currently holds 349 undertrials, saw a significant number of prisoners suffer from this sudden health crisis. Authorities have collected food and water samples from the jail’s kitchen and sent them for laboratory analysis to determine the exact cause of contamination.
A team comprising a Taluk health officer and three medical experts visited the jail premises to conduct a thorough investigation. Additionally, Mangaluru Commissioner of Police, Anupam Agrawal, inspected the hospital and assured that a detailed inquiry would be carried out to uncover the reason behind the foodborne illness.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation while awaiting the test results. The incident raises concerns about hygiene and food safety in prison facilities, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations to prevent similar occurrences.
