In a significant operation, the police in Mangaluru seized and destroyed a total of 335 kg of ganja, along with other narcotics, on Wednesday. The drugs were incinerated at the Re Sustainability Healthcare Solution Ltd, located in Kolnad Industrial Area, Mulki. Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal confirmed that, following court approval, narcotics confiscated from 37 cases in 2023-24 were destroyed. Along with the ganja, the haul included 6.5 kg of MDMA and 16 grams of cocaine, collectively valued at Rs 6.80 crore.
In 2024, the Mangaluru Commissionerate registered over 1,000 drug-related cases, including 88 instances of drug trafficking. Commissioner Agrawal highlighted the police department’s strict stance on drug enforcement, with dedicated anti-drug units in every subdivision to monitor and apprehend peddlers and users. He noted a rise in drug-related arrests due to these proactive measures.
The police force, acting on intelligence gathered from arrested users, has been able to infiltrate higher levels of the narcotics distribution chain. Agrawal revealed that Nigerian nationals operating from Bengaluru are significant suppliers, sourcing drugs from Delhi, thus indicating a vast, interconnected drug network spanning multiple regions.
With intensified surveillance and legal actions, the Mangaluru police are committed to cracking down on the growing drug menace, ensuring a safer environment for the community.
