As the India Meteorological Department predicts the arrival of the southwest monsoon by May-end, the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) has intensified efforts to handle monsoon-related emergencies across its service areas.
To ensure a steady power supply and rapid response to disruptions, special task forces have been formed in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru districts. A total of 489 personnel and 62 vehicles have been deployed across 14 divisions to manage field operations.
In Dakshina Kannada, 146 personnel and 29 vehicles are stationed in Attavar, Kavoor, Bantwal, and Puttur. Udupi has teams in Udupi (55 personnel, 5 vehicles), Karkala (24, 4), and Kundapura (48 personnel). In Shivamogga, 33 personnel and 1 vehicle are deployed in Shivamogga town, with additional teams in Shikaripura, Bhadravati, and Sagar. Chikkamagaluru has task forces in Chikkamagaluru (40 personnel), Koppa (41), and Kadur (34), supported by 14 vehicles in total.
Preventive measures began as early as April, with tree trimming near power lines already nearing completion in Kavoor, Mangaluru, Bantwal, and Puttur. MESCOM has also repaired 462 electric poles and serviced over 2,600 transformers to enhance grid stability.
A nodal officer has been assigned to oversee operations, while staff are required to upload geo-tagged images of completed tasks daily to a centralized system. Officials confirm that 80% of the work is done.
