Kundapur: MESCOM has kicked off a free, three-day training program aimed at creating local employment opportunities by teaching essential skills in climbing and descending electric poles. The program, which began on November 11 at Gandhi Maidan in Kundapur, is designed to help local youth prepare for recruitment as junior line workers by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL).

Approximately 80 candidates, all with SSLC qualifications, are participating in the training. The sessions are led by experienced staff from MESCOM’s Kundapur division, with medical and police personnel on-site for safety. Among the participants is Nayana, a local girl eager to gain the skills necessary for a career in the power sector.

Yashavanth, the executive engineer of MESCOM’s Kundapur division, explained that many candidates fail the climbing test during recruitment, which is why this training is crucial to help them succeed. The program, which is being supervised by senior and junior officials from the division, will continue for two more days.

During the training, several participants expressed concerns about recruitment policies, particularly the focus on SSLC marks, which they believe disadvantages qualified local candidates. They urged MESCOM and government officials to prioritize locals who have completed the training and to consider additional criteria beyond SSLC marks during the selection process. The youth are calling on local MPs and MLAs to push for reforms that would give local candidates a better chance at securing jobs with MESCOM.
