Meta has removed four Instagram accounts and one Facebook page across India after Mangaluru City Police flagged them for posting inflammatory and objectionable material. The crackdown follows multiple FIRs filed within Mangaluru limits for promoting hate online.
According to a police press note, the Urwa Police had booked a case involving Instagram handles vhp_bajrangadal_ashoknagar and shankha_nada for incendiary content. Additional cases were filed at Kavoor and Mangaluru South police stations against dj_bharath_2008 and karaavali_official, respectively.
Meanwhile, Barke Police registered a complaint against a Facebook page operated by Ashiq Maicala for provocative posts. All these cases were investigated by the Cyber, Economic, and Narcotic Crime (CEN) Police, who found grounds to recommend removal of the content.
Following their detailed report, Mangaluru City Police formally requested Meta to take down the accounts. Meta responded by deactivating all five pages nationwide.
The press release also noted that this brings the total number of deactivated accounts to seven (six Instagram, one Facebook), all taken down after official complaints from Mangaluru authorities.
This coordinated effort showcases how local policing and platform regulation are being used to counter digital hate and maintain communal harmony.
