Traditionally known for serving flights to Gulf countries, Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has seen notable growth, especially with the addition of new international destinations like Singapore. This expansion highlights the airport’s increasing capacity to handle a wider range of global flights. If MIA receives Point of Call (PoC) status, foreign airlines will be able to operate services directly from the airport, enhancing its connectivity and attracting more international carriers to the region.

Brijesh Chowta, the Member of Parliament for Dakshina Kannada, has voiced strong support for MIA’s PoC status. He emphasized, “Many people from our coastal region work in the Gulf and other countries, but the airport has not yet been granted PoC status. If approved, it would open doors for many more international flights to Mangaluru.” Chowta has pledged to meet with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to advocate for the status, which would improve travel options for local residents.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has noted that the allocation of PoC status depends on factors such as bilateral air service agreements, the size of Indian communities abroad, and mutual benefits for both India and foreign nations. Since MIA became an international airport in 2012, the PoC status has remained pending, despite high demand from aviation enthusiasts and local businesses.

Experts believe that granting PoC status would solidify MIA’s role as a key aviation hub on India’s west coast, boosting both regional economic growth and tourism. In addition to the new Singapore flight, Air India Express has announced fresh connections to Pune and Delhi, further enhancing MIA’s status.
