MLA Booked for Alleged Assault Provocation in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: The Kankanady Town police have registered an FIR against multiple individuals, including Mangalore City South MLA D. Vedavyasa Kamath (named as the fourth accused), for allegedly inciting his associates to attack a District Congress Committee (DCC) member.
Political Clash at Religious Event
The complaint was filed by Yashvantha Prabhu, a DCC worker, who stated that he was volunteering at the Brahmakalashotsava event at Shri Krishna Bhajana Mandira in Padavu Shaktinagara on Sunday night. During the program, MLC Ivan D’Souza was welcomed by attendees, and shortly after, MLA Kamath arrived and was also greeted.
According to Prabhu, the MLA made a remark directed at him and two others associated with Congress, stating, “Why are those who pelt stones at temples here?”
After the event, Prabhu, Ashalatha, and Dayanand Naik confronted Kamath, seeking an explanation and an apology. Following this, BJP workers Ashwith Kottary, Mani, Jayaprakash, and others allegedly hurled verbal abuses at Prabhu, tore his shirt, and physically attacked him. Prabhu claims that MLA Kamath encouraged the attack.
Legal Action & Counter-Complaint
Based on Prabhu’s complaint, police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Meanwhile, BJP worker Mani filed a counter-complaint against Prabhu and others, alleging caste-based abuse. As a result, an FIR was also registered under the Prevention of Atrocities Act.
Congress Condemns Attack
Dakshina Kannada DCC President Harish Kumar denounced the assault and demanded strict action against those involved. He also accused BJP members of past attacks on Congress workers and dismissed Kamath’s remarks as inappropriate for a sitting MLA.
Congress leader Padmaraj R alleged that Kamath was indulging in divisive politics, while Mangaluru City Block Congress President Prakash Salian challenged Kamath and Mani to take a truth test at Kadri Manjunatha Temple on Tuesday.
Political Tensions Rise
The incident has intensified political tensions in the region, with both parties standing firm on their claims. The police are investigating both complaints, and further action is awaited.
