Monsoon fury wreaks havoc in Mangaluru, leaves trail of disruption
With the arrival of the monsoon along the coastal region, heavy showers since early Sunday have triggered a chain of rain-related mishaps across Mangaluru and nearby areas. Among the worst-hit were Pumpwell, Barebail, and Kadaba, facing flooding, tree falls, and damage to homes and vehicles.
Flood chaos at Pumpwell chokes traffic
Relentless rainfall caused water to collect under the Pumpwell flyover, especially near the service road coming from Tokkottu. The absence of a proper drainage setup to divert water from multiple directions led to severe waterlogging.
Commuters, especially bikers and walkers, found the inundated stretch almost impossible to cross. Many vehicles broke down, and traffic came to a grinding halt. “It felt like riding through a stream. The road was completely submerged,” said a motorist who had to push his two-wheeler.
Fallen tree crushes homes in Barebail
In another incident, a huge tree toppled in Barebail late Saturday night, damaging two houses. One home bore the brunt as the tree smashed through its roof. Terrified, the occupants rushed to a neighbour’s house for safety.
Local officials and revenue teams visited the scene and assured help. While no injuries occurred, one house sustained major structural harm. Cleanup efforts began on Sunday morning.
Tree collapse hits car in Kadaba
In Kadaba’s Nujibaltila village, a tree fell on a moving vehicle. All passengers escaped with minor injuries and were treated at a nearby clinic. Soaked soil from constant rains likely weakened the tree’s roots.
