Mangaluru: The southwest monsoon has intensified over Karnataka’s coastal belt, triggering continuous and widespread rainfall on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and surrounding areas until June 16, warning of very heavy rain, possible flooding, and strong winds.

In response to the heavy showers, district administrations declared a holiday for schools on Thursday in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kodagu. The precautionary closure will continue in Udupi and Kodagu on Friday as well. In Udupi, all institutions from anganwadis to class 10 will remain shut, while in Kodagu, the order extends up to the PUC level.

Intermittent rain was reported across Dakshina Kannada, particularly affecting Bantwal, Kalladka, Beltangady, Ujire, Dharmasthala, Charmadi, Mangaluru, and other areas. While the downpour was heavy in the early morning, some relief was seen in the afternoon and evening.

Rainfall data recorded up to 8:30 am on June 12 showed Kilpady receiving the highest at 160 mm, followed by Baala (114.5 mm) and Pudu (110 mm). Several other locations recorded rainfall above 80 mm.

The IMD cautioned about possible waterlogging in low-lying zones and sudden river floods due to rising water levels in streams and rivers. In Udupi, regions like Katapady, Shirva, and Karkala witnessed consistent downpours, with rivers swelling in rural Kundapur and Karkala.
